Tips for great Facebook Live and podcasting sound

Do you like to do Facebook live? Interested in podcasting? Or maybe you want to start your own YouTube channel? For those without experience in these areas, one of the most important parts of the production is the sound. Hollow sound (from using your computer or phone’s microphone) is difficult to listen to and guaranteed to force your listeners and viewers to find the off button.

I bought a lapel mic for my iPhone, the type that clips to your clothes and has a long cable. It works beautifully and makes all the difference. It doesn’t even need a battery! If you’re a reporter (or civilian) doing Facebook live shots, don’t rely on the outside mic. Get a $20 lapel mic and you’ll be nearly broadcast quality. You won’t have to yell over background noise and will be able to speak in a normal tone of voice. (Yelling is hard to listen to, too!)

Need some help? Here’s a terrific article about podcasting from Tim O’Brien, the owner O’Brien Communications, a corporate communications consultancy in Pittsburgh.
